Resumo
Pili torti is a rare capillary dystrophy, classified as hereditary or acquired, in which the hair shafts twist in their own axis by 180° degrees at irregular intervals. Few cases of this disease have been described in the literature and its first occurrence in veterinary medicine was in short-haired kittens in a city in Italy in 1986. After a trichogram, the hairs were found to be flattened and twisted around their own axis. The second report also involved a male short-haired cat who presented with non-inflammatory multifocal symmetrical alopecia and whose trichogram revealed the presence of pili torti. In view of the rarity of reported cases of pili torti in veterinary medicine, the aim of this report was to describe a case of pili torti in a female Sphynx cat, five years old and weighing 3.8 kg. The animal was admitted with seborrhea (dyskeratinization) and delayed body development. The clinical examination showed that the feline had pain on palpation in the cervical spine, and the ophthalmic examination showed entropic eyes in the lower and posterior part with the presence of trachoma producing a lot of mucin and a lot of itching, cicatricial conjunctivitis, a lot of purulent production and secretion, excessive tearing and dull, opaque eyes. An X-ray of the cervical spine, trichogram, cytology, fundus examination, Schirmer test, blood count and biochemistry (ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, urea and creatinine) were carried out. It was possible to observe through the radiograph some vertebrae with reduced intervertebral spaces. The Schirmer test showed excessive tear production, while the blood count and biochemistry were all within normal limits. The trichogram, taken from the hair of the nasal planum, showed a brittle hair twisted 180° from its own axis, confirming the diagnosis of pili torti. In conclusion, as far as the authors are aware, this is the third case report of pili torti in veterinary medicine, in which the presence of twisted hair shafts as shown by microscopy confirms the diagnosis.
