Resumo
Objective: To analyze whether the prevalence of health and nutrition claims on labels is associated with factors such as food groups, price, brand, amount of critical nutrients and current labeling legislation. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using a sample of 7,057 food labels. Health and nutrition claims were coded by trained researchers according to protocols developed INFORMAS. Food prices per 100/gr or ml were deflated. The food brands were divided into two private and own brand. The proportions of foods high in added sugar, sodium and saturated fat that presented claims for these nutrients were calculated. Associations between health and nutrition claims and high in critical nutrients, price per 100g/ml, brand and degree of processing using were verified using Poisson regression with robust SEs. Results: Ultra-processed foods had the highest proportion of these claims. Around 10% of the foods with health claims, were high in added sugars, sodium or saturated fat. Around 32% of the foods with nutrition claims, were high in added sugars. Around 6% of foods high in sugar and high in sodium had claims of reduced content of these nutrients. Food groups from private label, were associated with higher health (adjusted PR 4.03, 95% CI 2.58; 6.29) and nutrition claim (adjusted PR 1.55, 95% CI 1.23; 1.96). Conclusions: Private label and ultra-processing were the main factor associated with the presence of health and nutrition claims on labels. Labeling policies should be regulatory mechanisms capable of inhibiting these claims on foods that exceed critical nutrients.
