Summary
In 1940, Lucio Costa (1902-1988) – modernist architect worldwide known as the author of Brasilia Master Plan – designed the so-called Mission Museum (Museu das Missões) erected at the archeological site of St. Michael the Archangel (São Miguel Arcanjo), architectural complex built in 1687, representative of the colonization process operated by Jesuits, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983. Dr. Lucio, as he will be called throughout his career, inaugurated, as an architect, a mode of intervention that we can still consider innovative, especially if we analyse that project taking account of the Venice Charter; as a technical employee of the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Service (currently IPHAN), Costa postulated the procedures that will be adopted by the institute from then on. This article aims to assess, by comparing the principles of the Venice Charter, to what extent the architect achieved the validity of contemporary solutions that are still visible. Our hypothesis of an anticipation of the values expressed in the sixty-year-old charter is strengthened by the architect statements included into the Brasília Commitment (1970), the first document to integrate an extensive national agreement in favour of the preservation and conservation of natural and cultural assets in Brazil. In order to achieve it, we intend to present the project prepared by Lucio Costa in its various aspects: the relationship of the object with the archaeological site and the ruin of the church of St. Michael the Archangel, functional program, and collection to be exhibited in the small museum, consolidation techniques and, in particular, the potential theoretical bases. To evaluate the extent and validity of the postulates stated by Lucio Costa's project as a guide for interventions in cultural assets in Brazil, we intend, briefly, to critically analyse and compare to the extension to the Museum of Missions, designed by the office Brasil Arquitetura (2014, not constructed). Nevertheless, the pioneer project revealed its consistency regarding the future Venice Charter through the careful relation between the archeological site and the new architecture, as can be seen in the role of the ruins, the hierarchical relationship with the museum, and over all the significance of autencity, defining principles and solutions that guided future projects of intervention in the country.
