Summary
Contemporary management and conservation of cultural heritage in Tanzania were introduced as part of the colonial package. Initially, the focus was only on preserving colonial monuments and sites, which not only undermined the traditional conservation system but also stripped the indigenous people's ways of doing things. This situation was attributed to the imposition of Western conservation ideas drawn from Athens and Venice Charters’ guidelines for African heritage conservation. Consequently, implementing those guidelines has led to neglecting the local communities as the primary stakeholders while shrugging off traditional knowledge's most relevant values and perceptions. This paper primarily focuses on the guidelines and conservation principles outlined in the Venice Charter of 1964 and their relevance to the current Tanzanian cultural heritage practices. It also examines how helpful it is and what is missing from the charter that affects the conservation practices of Tanzania's heritage.
