Summary
This article presents a discussion on the contributions made by the 1964 Venice Charter – especially through its Articles 1, 2, and 6 – to the conservation of ancient urban sites. It associates this with a discussion on the possible relationships that can be established between these contributions and the conservation of landscapes associated with the same sites, considering the inseparability existing between both elements. It thereby seeks to highlight aspects of the Charter that denote its pertinence and relevance for heritage approaches carried out in the current context – generally marked by the increasingly intense and accelerated occurrence of distinct processes of a complex nature which, in many cases, are associated with the generation of negative impacts on the conservation of the referred sites and landscapes. Additionally, it seeks to identify any gaps and challenges that still need to be overcome given the characteristics presented by such a context. For this purpose, the article carries out a critical analysis of the Charter's text in light of references constituted primarily by the thoughts of authors such as Gustavo Giovannoni (1873-1947) and Cesare Brandi (1906-1988), as well as subsequent documents such as the 1976 Nairobi Recommendation, the 1987 Washington Charter, and the 2013 Burra Charter, including among these also the Recommendation No. R(95) of 1995 and the European Landscape Convention of 2000. As its results, the article presents reflections and timely observations on the integrated conservation of heritage considered in its different scales – architectural, urban, and landscape – besides an assessment of the contemporary relevance of the principles contained in the Charter. Finally, in its conclusions, the article attests to and reinforces the validity and importance of the applicability of the Charter in the contemporary scenario, highlighting its contributions to the practical and theoretical dimensions of heritage conservation, with an emphasis on the issue of ancient sites and their landscapes.
