Summary
Street art, as a contemporary, vibrant and often culturally significant form of cultural expression, presents unique challenges and opportunities in the context of heritage preservation, intersecting with principles outlined in charters such as the Venice Charter and those concerning intangible and tangible cultural heritage. While the Venice Charter primarily focuses on the preservation of tangible heritage, its principles of authenticity, context, and minimal intervention can inform approaches to street art preservation and conservation. However, the intangible aspects of street art, including its temporal nature and its dynamic relationship with urban environments, pose distinct challenges not fully addressed by traditional conservation frameworks. In response to these challenges, digital archiving technology emerges as a promising tool for documenting and preserving street art in both tangible and intangible forms. Emerging global digital standards and frameworks of digital archiving technologies can facilitate the recording of street art in its original context, allowing for comprehensive documentation of the artwork's physical attributes, cultural significance, and social context and also enable comprehensive documentation of the praxis of street art. Moreover, digital platforms enable broader access to street art heritage, transcending geographical boundaries and temporal limitations. This paper discusses a review of existing international conservation conventions and charters and how they might intersect with the practice of street art. Also presented is a case study in the development of a digital archive, the mementoArtem Digital Street Art Archive Project, a knowledge base of street art being developed using the Arches Heritage Management Framework, close-range photogrammetry and CIDOC-CRM ontology. The mementoArtem project is a collaboration between the INSYTE-Cooley Research Laboratory, South East Technological University, Ireland, the Getty Conservation Institute, USA, and the Walls Project, Ireland.
