Introduction: The presence of religious terms in biomedical literature has been described in areas such as bioethics and health; however, differences in thematic representation and centrality remain insufficiently explored. Understanding whether the term “Catholic” is more frequently associated with ethical discussions or broader health topics may provide insight into how religious perspectives are incorporated into scientific literature. Objective: To compare the frequency and thematic centrality of PubMed-indexed publications associated with the terms “Catholic AND bioethics” and “Catholic AND health” between 2015 and 2025. Methods: A comparative bibliometric study was conducted using PubMed. Searches were performed using the combinations “Catholic AND bioethics” and “Catholic AND health” in all fields, with additional analysis restricted to title/abstract to assess thematic centrality. Absolute frequencies, annual means, and proportions were calculated. Differences in centrality proportions were evaluated using a z-test for proportions. Results: A total of 36,077 publications were identified for “Catholic AND health” and 479 for “Catholic AND bioethics, ” corresponding to an approximate ratio of 75:1. The mean annual number of publications was 3,280 for health and 43 for bioethics. When restricted to title/abstract, 14,978 publications were identified in the health group and 100 in the bioethics group, corresponding to centrality proportions of 41.5% and 20.9%, respectively. This difference was statistically significant (z = 9.1; p < 0.001). Conclusion: The term “Catholic” is substantially more frequent and more thematically central in publications related to general health than in bioethics within PubMed-indexed literature. These findings suggest that explicitly Catholic perspectives may be more readily integrated into broader health contexts than into bioethical discourse, highlighting a potential asymmetry in how religious identity is expressed across domains and pointing to possible gaps in the explicit incorporation of Catholic thought within bioethics literature.
