Resumo

Introduction: At the end of life, patients often reflect on the meaning of their lives and decide how best to use their remaining time to achieve their goals. Objective: To describe the experience of the ward of a public hospital specialized in palliative care in the Federal District - Brazil with the sacrament of marriage and to discuss its impact on patient care. Methods: Descriptive experience report, based on data recorded in medical records from march 2025 to february 2026, during which two Catholic weddings were performed by priests in the hospital chapel. Results: The celebration of the sacrament of marriage provides the opportunity to acquire new meaning for life, deepen their connection with loved ones, and increase their sense of dignity, self-esteem, and pride. It was also associated with a significant improvement in their symptoms and generated a positive effect for the interdisciplinary team. This illustrates the effectiveness of a palliative care team in helping patients achieve their life goals and supporting their families during a time when two important life events, marriage and the end of life, occur simultaneously. Conclusion: Marriage provided patients with the opportunity to attribute greater meaning to life at this time of finitude. The couple was able to profess their love and reaffirm their commitment to each other, as well as to God - in addition to strengthening their sense of dignity, self-esteem and pride. The realization of the marriage was also associated with an improvement in symptom control and had a positive effect on the multidisciplinary team, standing out in enabling important end-of-life goals, considering the Catholic values ??of the patients, offering a safe and welcoming environment, in addition to contributing to the relief of physical and psychological suffering.
