Resumo

Introduction: The increase in incurable chronic diseases, especially oncological ones, triggers feelings of hopelessness, pain relief, and psychological changes in individuals. Spirituality is a crucial pillar in palliative care, although its use is low; its focus is to ensure biopsychosocial well-being for terminally ill patients, enabling them to better cope with themselves, others, and their surrounding environment. The search for palliative care has grown as families seek other ways to alleviate suffering, combining pharmacological medical practice with spiritual forms of healing. Objective: To evaluate the use of spirituality with patients in palliative care. Methods: This is a descriptive analysis in the PubMed database using the descriptor "palliative health and spirituality" up to March 23, 2016. Filters were applied that found 3055 articles, 336 from the last year, 202 with free text, 21 systematic reviews, leaving 6 articles that met the inclusion criteria. Results: The sociodemographic profile of patients who most frequently used palliative care services were men, adults with medium to higher education, with a good family and social support network, and who had prior knowledge about palliative care. However, spiritual assistance to young people and children is neglected due to the low number of research studies in this age group, professional difficulties in addressing this topic with individuals who are in the process of development, prioritization of the body instead of the spirit, in addition to the multiple religious beliefs and social contexts involved. Conclusion: The use of spirituality in palliative care practice has shown good results due to a greater search for a sense of life, a reduction in the desire to hasten death, although it is little used and disseminated, especially among children and adolescents. Therefore, it is essential that it be included in public services focused on primary care, since it provides for longitudinal patient care, in addition to more research on the impact of palliative care on family bereavement.
