Summary
Bioinformatics is a field of study that involves the analysis and interpretation of biological data using computer science. The concepts of bioinformatics can be complex, and therefore interactive educational games can be an interesting approach to teaching this field. They can help explain concepts clearly and dynamically, as well as increase student motivation to learn. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly developing technology that can help the development of these educational games. In this work, we present the educational game Genome Quest was developed using AI assistance to be an interactive and interesting tool for teaching bioinformatics. The objective is to demonstrate how the game can be used as an educational tool to teach complex concepts in a clearer and more attractive to students. Genome Quest is a board game designed for 2-4 players, who intend to assemble a complete genome sequence by collecting and assembling short DNA sequences. Players start by choosing a piece and placing it on the starting space of the game board. On each turn, a player draws a DNA sequence card from the deck and places it on their genome assembly board, trying to assemble the short sequence into a longer DNA fragment that matches the sequence on their assembly challenge card. The game incorporates challenges such as increasingly long and difficult assembly challenge cards, sequencing errors, and obstacles that encourage players to think critically and strategically. The first player to assemble a complete genome sequence wins the game. The purpose of the game is to offer an engaging and interactive experience for students to learn about genome assembly and sequencing, as well as promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This game has, the game has the potential to be a tool for teaching bioinformatics, as well as for assessing students' understanding of basic genomics and DNA sequencing concepts. The role of AI in generating DNA sequences, the rules and mechanics of the game, shows how this technology can be a support tool for teaching bioinformatics, making learning more accessible and effective.
