Summary
Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a hematopoietic cytokine that stimulates the neutrophil granulocyte population. The CSF3 gene encodes a member of the IL-6 superfamily of cytokines, which in turn controls granulocyte production, differentiation, and function. A modified form of this protein is administered to prevent and/or control chemotherapy-induced neutropenia in breast cancer. It’s not established if treatment with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has either a positive or negative impact in breast cancer patients outcome in each of the four main molecular subtypes Luminal a, Luminal b, Her-2 and Basal. This study aimed to investigate if CSF3 expression in the main breast cancer subtypes interferes in the survival time in patient samples. We used The Cancer Genome Atlas TCGA-BRCA public data to perform the Kaplan-Meir plots with the survminer package in R studio environment version 4.3. The data was queried from GDC project, type gene expression quantification, category transcriptome profiling, workflow type STAR - Counts, primary tumor samples. CSF3 gene data was downloaded in the TPM format, using the “surv.median.line” hv (horizontal/vertical), method to divide in Low and High expression groups. Our results suggest that patients which presented High expression of the CSF3 gene had a longer overall survival time within a period of five years when compared to patients with Low expression of the CSF3 gene. That was observed for the breast cancer subtypes Luminal A and Her2. On the other hand, patients which presented Low expression of the CSF3 gene had a longer overall survival time within a period of five years when compared to patients with High expression of the CSF3 gene in the Basal breast cancer subtype. The subtype Luminal B kaplan-meier plot did not show significance.
