Summary
The ISCB Regional Student Group of Brazil (RSG-Brazil) is at the forefront of promoting bioinformatics and computational biology education in Brazil. In 2019, the RSG-Brazil established its Educational Committee (EduComm) with a dual mission aimed to develop educational resources and training materials in Portuguese, and also, critically evaluating the effectiveness of bioinformatics training across the nation. Drawing upon the ISCB core competency framework 3.0, the EduComm formulated a training model designed to comprehensively assess proficiency across a spectrum of technical needs addressed from different bioinformatics profiles and their needs. This model, encompassing seven fundamental domains crucial for bioinformatics education—Biology, Statistics, Computer Science, Ethics, Bioinformatics Applications, Communication, and Professional Development—served as the cornerstone for their endeavors. To illuminate the educational needs of the Brazilian bioinformatics community, a strategic survey was elaborated and conducted from November 2023 to April 2024, gathering 375 responses from individuals across 21 states, predominantly from Bioinformatics users encompassing a wide range of academic levels, including undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees, spanning various roles such as clinicians, biocurators, professors, and ethics specialists. The distribution of bioinformatics professionals across Brazil demonstrates a notable concentration in specific states, reflecting the geographical landscape of advanced academic and research activities in the field. São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Para, presented a high number of researchers, reflecting these regions' status as pivotal hubs for advanced academic and research activities within the field. Moreover, the survey outcomes provided notable insights into region-specific and profile-specific needs in Bioinformatics Topics, thus furnishing valuable guidance for curriculum refinement and crafting training materials for the community. This work presents the findings from the survey conducted by RSG-Brazil's EduComm and highlights the importance of localized educational initiatives in advancing bioinformatics education on a global scale.
