Summary
The Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the most cultivated fishes in the world. Various diseases can occur in intensive farming, but streptococcosis, caused mainly by Streptococcus agalactiae, is the most common in tilapia farming, with mortality rates reaching up to 70%. Many studies have been conducted to better understand the interaction between tilapia and the pathogen during the infection process, contributing to the management of streptococcosis.Transposable elements (TEs) can introduce variations in the genome, influencing the expression of genes potentially associated with the disease, affecting both disease progression and the susceptibility of the animal host. This study analyzed the differential expression of TEs in Nile tilapia comparing healthy (control) and infected with two different serotypes of S. agalactiae: strain E8-UEL, serotype Ib, and strain Maranhão, serotype III. TE annotation was performed through the RepeatMasker tool, followed by comparative analysis using Cdhit and GFFCompare tools to assess the genomic differences of the elements between groups. Subsequently, the TEtranscripts tool allowed the assessment of TEs expression patterns. Results revealed a total of 3793 TEs, with 1071 TEs annotated in the control group, 1323 TEs in animals infected with the E8-UEL strain, and 1399 TEs in animals infected with the Maranhão strain, all distributed across 34 superfamilies. Notably, differential expression analysis indicated potential impacts of TEs on host gene expression during the infection, with distinct TE expression profiles observed within the genomes. These findings underscore the potential role of TEs in host-pathogen interaction between tilapia and S. agalactiae, offering new perspectives for the development of disease control strategies in aquaculture.
