Summary
This study asserts the effective integration of anaerobic digestion and the white-rot fungus Pleurotus ostreatus for the superior treatment of soluble coffee wastewater (SCWW). The coffee production process generates substantial volumes of SCWW, rich in toxic compounds such as phenolic substances that present significant environmental hazards. While anaerobic digestion efficiently reduces organic matter and generates biogas, the presence of these toxic compounds compromises its effectiveness. Our research confirms that P. ostreatus significantly enhances the treatment of SCWW following anaerobic digestion by actively degrading phenolic compounds and decolorizing the wastewater. The results demonstrate a remarkable increase in the removal of complex pollutants, highlighting the fungus's capability to efficiently degrade toxic substances and mitigate wastewater color. This innovative approach not only elevates the treatment efficiency of SCWW but also positions itself as a sustainable solution to the environmental challenges posed by soluble coffee production. By coupling microbial and fungal processes, this study emphasizes the potential for advanced strategies in wastewater management, transforming waste into valuable resources while decisively contributing to energy transition and decarbonization efforts.
