Summary
This study presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of biochar-based electrodes in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Drawing from 28 eligible studies and 88 independent comparisons, the pooled mean power density was estimated at approximately 2,481 mW/m², demonstrating biochar’s competitiveness with conventional carbon materials. Moderator analyses revealed that electrode placement, precursor pre-treatment, and cathode co-materials significantly shaped MFC performance, while a progressive improvement was observed across publication years. Despite the promising results, high heterogeneity highlights the context-dependent nature of biochar performance and the lack of standardized reporting in the field.
