Resumo
Organic solar cells (OSC) are devices based on small molecules or conjugated polymers, which can transform light energy into electric current [1]. These devices have attracted attention of the scientific community because of their low manufacturing cost, compatibility with flexible electronics, and efficiencies that approaches those of semicrystalline silicon. Despite the high efficiencies of OSCs, there is a lack of scientific studies that investigate degradation processes in continuous use and under ambient conditions. Series and shunt resistors are essential components that contribute significantly to the operation and long-term stability of the device. Understanding the degradation in resistances, both in series and in parallel, reveals crucial aspects especially in internal and external testing. However, this analysis is often underestimated by the scientific community, despite representing a highly accurate parameter for examining the impacts of degradation. Therefore, in this work focuses on the development and characterization of organic photovoltaic devices in order to study of the degradation effect on series and shunt resistance under outdoor and indoor conditions, following the ISOS protocols [2]. For this purpose, active layers produced from a polymer blend of P3HT - poly(3-hexylthiophene) - with PC61BM - [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid - were used, with area of 0.045 cm2 and conventional structure ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:PCBM/Ca/Al, which is a well-known organic solar cell structure of the bulk-heterojunction (BHJ). The characterization was conducted by using a ThermoOriel class AAA solar simulator and a Keithley source and meter 238. Current and voltage measurements (J-V) under illumination (100 mW/cm2) was obtained allowing one to extract OSC characteristics and parameters. Fresh devices provided an average value of short circuit current density (JSC) of 10.21 mA/cm2, Open Circuit Voltage (VOC) of 0.62 V, Fill factor (FF) of 53.5%, and Power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.40 %. The traditional equivalent circuit model was employed to assess the degradation impact on the series and shunt resistances. Here, the device was exposed directly to atmospheric air without additional encapsulation. Results revealed that the device exhibited initial values of series resistance (Rs) of 2.45 O·cm² and shunt resistance (Rsh) of 270 O·cm². Alternative analysis of the Rs and Rsh resistances over the course of the tests revealed and confirmed that humidity, present in both indoor and outdoor tests, has a significant influence on the cell's performance and guidelines for improving lifetime of OSC under continuous operation is discussed.
