Summary
Germán Darío Gómez Higuita (DR); EESC-USP , Gregório Couto Faria (Or); IFSC-USP g.gomez@usp.br ; gcfaria@ifsc.usp.br PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate) is a conducting polymer widely used in organic electronics. Thanks to its properties it has become an attractive material in several applications, as electrodes, supercapacitors, sensors, among other. Despite of PEDOT:PSS has been studied extensively, in only a few publications the properties of the conductive inks are correlated with their synthesis parameters, opening a topic that has not been fully explored. In particular, little is known about the impact of the PSS characteristic on PEDOT:PSS properties. In a previous work, we showed that the variation of oxidant agent (OA) during the PEDOT:PSS synthesis impact the charge density of the final polymer films.[1] This effect was associated with the reduction of PSS?(aq) chain rigidity induced by the screening of electrostatic interactions of sulfonate groups (SO3?) with OA ions. Therefore, the possibility to couple charged PEDOT+ with PSS? counterpart is decreased. Nonetheless, is still missing whether the counterion of PSS? also interferes with the collective dynamics of charged chains in solution and its impact on the electrical properties of PEDOT:PSS. In the work presented here, we show the results of the Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurement of PSS solutions with different counterions: the poly-acid (PSS??h+) and the poly-salt (PSS??Na+) form. Furthermore, we performed the electrical characterization of PEDOT:PSS/PSSNa films through four-point probe method. The DLS measurements indicated that PSSNa chains have lower electrostatic rigidity than PSSh chains. We also found that the same addition of OA to the solution causes higher shrinkage in chains from the poly-salt than those from the poly-acid, increasing the hindering of PEDOT+ and PSS? coupling. This assumption agrees well with the results of four-point probe showing that PEDOT:PSS ink made with the PSSNa have 10x lower conductivity values than those using PSSh.
