Resumo
Pranayamas are yogic breathing practices known to improve quality of life and chronic stress-related complications. We conducted a remote study to evaluate the effects of a 12-week Online Ujjayi Pranayama intervention (known as Ocean Breathing) on Brazilian university healthy volunteers. This remote design was used because of the COVID-19 restrictions in 2022. The intervention was delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous yoga classes. From 72 participants, 31 participants remained at the 6-week mark and only 27 completed the full 12-week program. Of these, 17 women from various Brazilian states, achieved a practice frequency of at least 50%. From nine psychometric scales used in the study, four of them presented significant results: we observed through ANOVA tests a reduction in mind wandering (MEWS), negative affect (PANAS-N) and perceived stress (PSS), and an enhancement in interoceptive awareness (MAIA) over the course of the intervention. More specifically, significant differences were observed between week 0 and week 12 for all four scales, between week 6 and week 12 for MEWS, and between week 0 and week 6 for MAIA. Furthermore, significant positive correlations were found between MEWS, PANAS-N and PPS before and after 12 weeks of pranayama intervention, indicating that there is a direct co-variation considering perceived stress, negative affect and mind wandering, and that this correlation also encompassed the reduction in these three factors after intervention. Overall, regular Ujjayi practice may reduce stress, negative affect and mind wandering while enhancing interoceptive awareness. These findings have potential implications for stress management, in strategies to promote psychological well-being among students.
