Summary
Maranhão is located in the transition between the Northeastern and Northern Brazil, possessing a species richness due the influences of the Amazon Forest, Cerrado, Mangrove, Dunes and Caatinga. Aiming to promote the knowledge and conservation of orchid flora and other aspects of Botany, in August of 2015, the Laboratory of Orchid Studies (LOS) was started. The LOS and collaborators from University of São Paulo (USP - Ribeirão Preto - SP) and UFMA (Campi Bacabal and Codó) develop field and laboratory research in the following areas: 1- ) Floristic survey with emphasis on Orchidaceae from Maranhão: Based on fieldworks in which orchids and other native plants to Maranhão are collected. The collected specimens are photographed and identified based on specific literature and incorporated into the Herbarium of Maranhão (MAR) of UFMA. Based on these studies, about 70 species of Orchidaceae have been identified, of which 18 are new occurrences for the Flora of Maranhão, and also new occurrences of Passifloraceae (one species), Bromeliaceae (15 species), Pteridophytes (three species) and Gentianaceae (one species). The papers are being published or submitted for publication. 2- ) Pollination Studies on Orchidaceae: These studies are developed in urban environment and forest fragments, trying to identify on the visitors/ pollinators, and the factors that influence the reproductive success of these orchids; 3- ) In vitro propagation of Orchidaceae: These study aims to germinate orchid seeds for the purpose of conservation and reintroduction of endangered species. Thus, the LOS aims to contribute to the formation of new researchers capable of identify and conserve the flora from Maranhão. For this reason studies on taxonomy, systematics, pollination and in vitro propagation are been conducted. Since Maranhão is subject to anthropogenic disturbance, these studies are fundamental for conservation.
