Summary
With the increase in neurophysiological tests to support soundscape studies, it is not clear, in some cases, which tests will respond conclusively to how the auditory processes, specifically regarding memory retrieval, in the human brain work. Combining neurophysiological and cognitive memory tests while exposing participants to a soundscape provides a holistic view of how auditory stimuli interact with the brain to influence memory retrieval. This approach deepens our understanding of cognitive processes and has practical implications for improving environments that foster better memory performance. This study aims to verify which neurophysiological tests combined with cognitive tests are suitable for short-, mid-, and long-term memory retrieval. At the same time, different urban soundscape scenes are reproduced in the background. The neurophysiological equipment used in this study is a Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) for spatial neuroimaging of the brain, electrocardiography (ECG) sensors - for measuring heart rate, temporal, spectral and nonlinear signal parameters – and electrodermal activity (EDA) sensor for measuring electrical properties of the skin with the reproduced stimuli. This study will help delimit objective and subjective instruments for the memory retrieval of urban soundscapes from the MEMOSOUND project.
