Summary
Hong Kong, one of the most densely populated cities globally, boasts an extensive transportation network that supports daily life but also contributes to noise pollution in neighborhoods near transport routes, including railways. While installing noise barriers may not be a feasible solution due to logistical challenges, acoustic windows and balconies have been introduced as innovative measures to mitigate railway noise. Full-scale model tests were conducted in an off-site mock-up testing area with the specimen installed. The measurement setup was designed to reflect the actual conditions of the site, including source-to-receiver elevation and horizontal angles. The effectiveness of the acoustic window and balcony was evaluated by comparing outdoor and indoor sound pressure levels, factoring in the actual A-weighted railway noise spectrum. The study demonstrates that these measures significantly reduce indoor railway noise levels, with further performance improvements possible through design adjustments and the addition of absorption materials.
