Summary
One of the primary sources of railway noise is the rolling noise generated between the wheels and the rail. This noise is influenced by factors such as wheel shape and rail roughness, both of which change over time. To address this, we developed a continuous monitoring system that can track noise levels at the bottom surface of the viaduct. Using this system, we identified train configurations and bogies where noise levels increased, and subsequently shaved these wheels to reduce the noise. This paper discusses the noise monitoring system, the method for calculating noise levels for each bogie, and the wheel grinding technique.
