Summary
his paper critically reread the Venice Charter, examining its application and challenges in the field of global cultural heritage conservation since its inception in 1964, particularly in managing the conflicts between globalization and local conservation needs. Through the analysis of specific heritage conservation projects in Shanxi Province, the paper demonstrates how the Charter is applied in practice and its role in facilitating or restricting local heritage conservation efforts. The study highlights that while the Venice Charter has provided theoretical and methodological guidance for many heritage projects worldwide, its Eurocentric perspective has also sparked considerable debate, especially in non-Western cultural contexts. The cases from Shanxi show that local conservation efforts often need to balance adherence to the Charter’s international standards with fulfilling local socio-cultural demands. These examples reflect how practical adjustments and adaptations to the Charter’s guidelines are made to protect the authenticity and integrity of heritage while promoting community involvement and cultural continuity. Furthermore, the paper explores how a reinterpretation of the Venice Charter can better reflect and respect cultural diversity in a globalized context. By offering a range of specific strategies and recommendations, this research aims to promote the formation of a more inclusive and flexible global framework for cultural heritage conservation to meet contemporary diverse challenges. The contribution of this paper lies in proposing a new perspective on how to respect universal principles of global heritage protection while adapting to the specific needs of local contexts, providing significant insights and guidance for both global and local heritage conservation practitioners.
