Summary
Since the adoption of the Venice Charter, the concept of integrity has continuously expanded and evolved. This paper traces the changes in the concept of integrity, particularly the new challenges posed by cultural landscapes in the Chinese context. Using the example of Jingdezhen, a site on China's UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, we analyze three distinct features of Chinese cultural landscapes: the integrated regional scale and the complexity of functional structures, handicraft and cultural space, the Feng Shui philosophy, which all present new demands on the definition of integrity. This research is conducted from the perspectives of spatial integrity, cultural space integrity, and natural-cultural integrity: firstly, the large-scale regional integration of ceramic raw material production, transportation, and trade networks based on waterways and land routes, as well as the spatial integrity characteristics of the industry chain's spatial combinations of different functional areas for raw materials, fuels, logistics, and commerce. Secondly, the combination of intangible cultural heritage and ceramic architecture forms a spectrum of ceramic cultural spaces, constituting the cultural spatial (tangible-intangible heritage) integrity of a living ceramic cultural landscape. Thirdly, the Feng Shui analysis of ceramic settlement and architectural site selection, forming the natural-cultural integrity. Drawing from our experience leading Jingdezhen's UNESCO World Heritage nomination, practical strategies are proposed for archaeological and literature research, architectural heritage conservation, and adaptive reuse, constructing a practical toolbox for World Heritage integrity.
