Summary
On 8th January, 2023, Brasilia had to face an extraordinary situation when architectural destruction became a fact. Far from the turbulent critical approaches that used to deal with Brazilian modern capital and its architecture another historiographical moment was defined to new reflections related to achieve new meanings about our heritage. After the almost terrorist attacks against the three most emblematic buildings of the modernist capital, that is, the headquarters of the three powers of the republic, a discussion about the values of modern architecture and its symbolic character was resumed. In addition to the limits of representation, other constructive aspects related to transparency, plastic lightness and direct relationships between interior/exterior were highlighted. For common sense, the lack of understanding about what this architecture is and its extraordinary quality is evident. For experts in architecture and heritage, the limits of intervention and renovation that the destruction imposed in response became evident. For politicians and managers of the three buildings, the technical challenges seem greater than any historical or theoretical problems that these extraordinary works demand. This communication aims to problematize the consequences of the destruction and speculate on the challenges of rehabilitating the sense of something Brazilian, of something national and modern that this architecture possesses, transgressing the historiographical limitation of a country of the future, which was elaborated in the past, but which does not help thinking about the pressing demands of facing the present. Brasilia, as a capital city, cannot remain stagnant to the stereotypes with which historiography intended to end its extraordinary initial trajectory. Brasília as a heritage challenge is what needs to be worked on as part of everyday urban planning and as part of updating the historical debate about ourselves.
