Summary
Since its translation into Chinese in 1982, the Venice Charter has been gradually familiarized by professionals and conservation architects, serving as an important guiding principle in practice. With the passage of time, China has formulated and revised the Principles for the Conservation of Heritage Sites in China in 2002 and 2015 respectively, as a response to local circumstances.   In the case of the Forbidden City, while the Venice Charter emphasizes restoration as a highly specialized operation, it lacks detailed elaboration on the process itself. Despite the variations in technical and management processes among different countries, general principles still demand particular attention. The aforementioned Principles in China have provided detailed requirements for the conservation and management process, focusing specifically on the legitimacy and feasibility for effective conservation of monuments and historic sites.   Various measures implemented by the Forbidden City, such as general surveys, key investigations, value assessments, master planning, daily maintenance and management of buildings, adhering to the Principles, are further understandings and explorations of the key articles of the Venice Charter.   In this essay, we will also examine the general conservation practices in the Forbidden City, with a specific restoration case of an interior shrine to better interpret the significance of proper and reasonable process for high quality conservation. We will also discuss measures necessary to ensure that the superimposed values will not be removed or destroyed solely by individual decisions or actions, as described in the Venice Charter.
