Resumo
This study investigate photocalytic performance of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) produced by the green route, in a simple way, economical and sustainable way, using pineapple (Ananas comosus) extract as reducing agent. The crown and peel extracts act as natural reducing and stabilizing agents, eliminating the need for harmful chemical products, resulting in a fast and eco-friendly process. Zinc sulfate (ZnSO4·5H2O) was used as precursor, and the formation of ZnO NPs was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to identify the functional groups involved in NPs formation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provided detailed images of the nanoparticles surface morphology; moreover, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) evaluated the thermal stability and composition of the nanoparticles. After characterization, zinc oxide nanoparticles were used for photocatalytic activity in the removal of methylene blue, and their optical properties were measured by UV-Vis analysis. This study demonstrated photocatalytic efficacy of ZnO NPs produced by green route in the degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation. A degradation of 96.7% (Confidence Limit = 0.003) was observed after 3 hours of irradiation under ambient conditions.
