Summary
Irrigation with brackish water reduces the soil osmotic potential and, consequently, causes stress due to toxicity caused by specific ions, affecting physiological processes in plants. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of irrigation with groundwater with different salt concentrations on the emergence of maize seedlings of the variety BRS Caatingueiro. The experiment was conducted under controlled environmental conditions, in a completely randomized design, with 7 treatments, consisting of irrigation solutions with different electrical conductivities (EC) (T1=0.00 - Control; T2= 2.00; T3=4.00; T4=6 .00; T5=8.00; T6=10.00; and T7=12.00 dS m-1), using four replications per treatment. The planting was carried out using 30 seeds for each replication, totaling 840 seeds. Irrigations with brackish solutions were carried out according to the water needs of the plants in each treatment. The plants were evaluated for emergence percentage, relative frequency, and speed index. Significant effects of the different salt concentrations were observed on emergence percentage, relative frequency, and speed index. In general, the regression analysis showed that EC up to 4.0 dS m-1 presented the best results for the variables studied; however, the gradual increase in toxic salt levels resulted in decreases in speed of biochemical, physiological, and morphogenic processes necessary for germination, emergence, and formation of new seedlings. The maize variety BRS Caatingueiro showed low tolerance to salinity, from the EC of 6.00 dS m-1 onwards.
