Summary
Citrus greening or Huanglongbing (HLB) is caused by the phloem-limited intracellular Gram-negative bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) has a serious impact on Brazilian Citrus Industry. CLas promotes phloem dysfunction, root death, impairing nutrition and hormonal balance. In order to study how foliar fertilization and bioregulators affect disease severity and fruit mass, three-year-old 'Lima Verde' orange trees (Citrus sinensis, Osbeck) infected with HLB (PCR+) with symptomatic and asymptomatic branches, were submitted for two years to monthly applications of nutrient solution and bioregulators. The solution consisted of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, B, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Mo and Ni at concentrations of 140, 60, 30, 140, 20, 36; 1.26, 3.63, 1.26, 0.18, 0.17 and 1.9 mg L-1; and GA3, 5 mg L-1 and 2,4-D 4 mg L-1 bioregulators, in addition to healthy (PCR-) and diseased (PCR+) controls. To establish the dry mass of the fruits, 5 fruits of 4 replicates were randomly taken at four times, from fixation to maturation. The severity of HLB was evaluated by the % of the crown affected by symptoms of the disease. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and means were compared by Tukey's test (p<0.05). Disease severity was reduced by bioregulators. These partially benefited the fruit dry matter gain in symptomatic branches. The isolated application of nutrients benefited only the severity, without altering the fruit growth. The association of bioregulators and nutrition allowed growth in a similar way to healthy control and greatly reduced the severity of the disease.
