The 2nd Symposium on The Biology of Galls

The 2nd Symposium on The Biology of Galls is the second version of an inter-university event, with participation of researchers and students from UFRJ, UERJ, UFMG, UFU, UFG, and other interested institutions. Scientists of distinct areas of  this multidisciplinary topic were invited to share the novelties on Biology of Galls (Cecidology)

The virtual event is scheduled to February 25th to 27th, 2021. The activities will consist of lectures and roundtables focusing on current and interdisciplinary themes in cecidology. The discussions will focus on expanding and integrating the research lines, expanding the scopes of the studies. The event will be held in English. The event promoted a fruitful scenario of interdisciplinary discussions involving students and researchers with different skills and formations during an immersive experience. We had field trips for gall collection and laboratory activities, all conducted using English as the official language.

Together with the event, the professors offered a theoretical-practical course in which interested students could develop interdisciplinary projects with the galls collected at the Parque Estadual do Itacolomi. The event and the course were complementary to these students, offering a distinctive experience, with: (1) language immersion; (2) practical studies developed by students and supervised by researchers from different areas of Cecidology; (3) contact with the most recent discussions in the Biology of Galls, from distinct point of views.

The 2nd Symposium on The Biology of Galls was planned to be held at the Parque Estadual da Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the mission to maintain the quality, interdisciplinarity and integration offered by the first edition of the event. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, and our plans had to be changed.

With the support approved by the FAPERJ (Fundação Carlos Chagas Filho de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, or Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research Support of the State of Rio de Janeiro), the committee decided to maintain the realization of the event, with participation of five (5) confirmed foreigner and eight (8) Brazilian cecidologists. The Organizing Committee is formed by Dr. Bruno Ferreira (UFRJ), Dr. Rosy Isaias (UFMG), Dr. Renê Carneiro, Dr. Valéria Maia (UFRJ), Dr. Denis Oliveira (UFU), and Dr. Marcelo Guerra (UERJ), with courses offered in graduate programs of UFRJ (PPG Botânica and PPG Zoologia), UFMG (PPG Biologia Vegetal), UFU (PPG Ecologia); and undergraduate programs in UFRJ and UFG.

The mission of the 2nd Symposium on The Biology of Galls is to offer our students and interested researchers a comprehensive view of the most current topics on the Biology of Galls. We hope that the event may promote the integrative facet of Cecidology among students and researchers, planting new ideas and questions in their current study systems.
