JOEEL - International Study Days on Literary Space is a scientific event held annually by TOPUS - Interinstitutional Research Group on Space, Literature and Other Arts, registered in the CNPq research Directory, with headquarters located at the University of Brasilia - UnB. Starting its activities in November 2012, the TOPUS group was created to fill an important gap with respect to the research of fictional space in the field of literary studies. It is, therefore meant to be a debate environment aimed at deepening the knowledge about the structuring category of space that is found in literary and non-literary works.
Through a partnership with some higher education institutions in Portugal, TOPUS has never disregarded the annual organization of the JOEEL, which in odd years takes place in Brazil (held in a different Institution in each new edition) and in even years in Portugal (always in the city of Viseu, located in the central region of the country). To date, the event has been held as specified below:
• 2013 - Uberaba-MG | Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro – UFTM
• 2014 - Viseu | Polytechnic Institute of Viseu/School of Education of Viseu
• 2015 - Brasília-DF | University of Brasilia - UnB
• 2016 - Viseu | Polytechnic Institute of Viseu/School of Education of Viseu
• 2017 - Rio de Janeiro-RJ | Pedro II College
• 2018 - Viseu | Polytechnic Institute of Viseu/School of Education of Viseu
•2019 - Teresina-PI | Federal University of Piauí/State University of Piauí/State University of Maranhão
• 2020 - VIII JOEEL | Online Event
• 2021 - IX JOEEL | Online Event
It’s a usual practice to honour, when the event is held in Brazil, a Portuguese writer; on the other hand, when in Portugal, tribute is supposed to be paid to a Brazilian writer/critic. This strategy was devised so as to stimulate cultural exchange between the two nations.
Last year we held the second WEBJOEEL edition. This year it will be a face-to-face event in Viseu, Portugal.
In this year 2022, X JOEEL will be in person and the central theme is Space in the work of Agustina Bessa-Luís.
The TOPUS Research Group is honoured to announce that it will hold the X JOEEL - International Study Days on Literary Space on 12 – 14 October 2022. JOEEL is an event that will take place in Viseu, a city located in the central region of Portugal.
In this edition, the conference guiding theme will be SPACE IN THE WORK OF AGUSTINA BESSA-LUÍS, a female writer who would complete 100 years of age in 2022.Thus, the event is seen as being a fair tribute to the centenary of the birth of one of the greatest voices in Portuguese Contemporary Literature.
In addition to the central theme, papers focused on space in literature and other arts will also be accepted.
