XI Radiocarbon and Archaeology International Symposium

XI Radiocarbon and Archaeology International Symposium

presencial Núcleo de Estudos em Biomassa e Gerenciamento de Águas (NAB) - Niterói - Rio de Janeiro - Brasil

About the event

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to participate in the IX International Symposium on Radiocarbon and Archaeology, which will be held in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from June 30 to July 3, 2026. The conference will bring together researchers, students, and practitioners from around the world working on radiocarbon and related approaches applied to archaeology, cultural heritage, paleoenvironmental research, and related fields, creating a welcoming space for interdisciplinary dialogue and international collaboration.

The creation of the Radiocarbon Laboratory of the Fluminense Federal University (LAC-UFF) in 2012 caused an increase in archaeological research using 14C dating in Brazil. This includes chronological and environmental investigations in diverse contexts, from the iconic Brazilian coastal shell mound to the southern cerrittos.

LAC-UFF has hosted important international events for the radiocarbon community, such as the I Latin American Radiocarbon Conference (CLARA) in 2019 and the AIEA–Fluminense Federal University Joint Workshop on Mass Spectrometry with Radiocarbon Accelerators for the Preservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage in Latin America in 2024.

In 2026, in addition to Radiocarbon and Archaeology in Brazil, III CLARA and Radiocarbon and Diet, in Chile, will further strengthen the Latin American radiocarbon community and our exchange with colleagues from other countries. parts of the world.

Meeting Venue The meeting will take place at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), headquartered at the Center for Studies in Biomass and Water Management (NAB).

The venue offers a modern auditorium with a capacity of up to 200 attendees, dedicated spaces for poster sessions, and excellent infrastructure for scientific discussions and networking. In addition to its facilities, NAB offers a beautiful panoramic view of Guanabara Bay and the city of Rio de Janeiro, providing an inspiring environment for exchanging ideas and building collaborations.

Located just across the bay from Rio de Janeiro, Niterói combines a vibrant academic environment with stunning natural landscapes and a rich cultural scene. The choice of this location reflects the spirit of the Radiocarbon and Archaeology Conference: a place where high-level scientific exchange meets openness, diversity, and meaningful interaction in a memorable setting.
