“Why delayed motherhood? Women’s
decisions, 1910s-2020s”
Celebrity mothers who birth at
the age of 45 or 50; the miracles of assisted reproductive technology, these
kinds of stories excite social media today.
But the phenomenon of delayed childbirth is not unique to the 21st
century. In the past, women have
experienced late motherhood, both unintentionally and intentionally. For over the century, medical practitioners,
social commentators, and demographers have debated the economic, social, and
cultural reasons underlying the advanced maternal age of a population; and,
women postponing pregnancy have spoken out, often defending or justifying their
decision. “Why delayed motherhood?
Women’s decisions, 1910s-2020s” addresses the changing perspectives on late
motherhood and, most especially, women’s experiences.
