IV CACS

The Conrado Silva Acoustics Student Competition (CACS) was created in 2017 with the objective of stimulating the interest of undergraduate students in the area of acoustics, encouraging technical quality, creativity and innovation in acoustic-architectural solutions.

The contest is an important action for the training of human resources, for encouraging scientific initiation and for the development of design thinking based on acoustic performance.

CACS honors Professor Conrado Jorge Silva de Marco, a prominent historical figure in Brazilian Acoustics, recognized for his pioneering performance and for his unique trajectory of articulation between the fields of music and acoustics. Professor Conrado Silva has worked as a professor at the University of Brasília (UnB), São Paulo State University (Unesp), Santa Marcelina College and São Paulo School of Fine Arts, in addition to having coordinated the Latin American Courses of Contemporary Music.

Previous editions of the Conrado Silva Student Competition (CACS) addressed the following topics:

  • I CACS: " Multipurpose Room" (Porto Alegre, 2018);

  • II CACS: "Architectural party based on acoustic performance" (Florianópolis, 2022); e

  • III CACS: "Acoustic quality of the school space: emphasis on learning environments" (Natal, 2023).

With the IV CACS, Sobrac aims to contribute to the awakening of attention to acoustics among undergraduate students, in addition to encouraging technical quality, creativity and innovation in acoustic-architectural solutions to the proposed problem. Therefore, the objective is to contribute to the consolidation of the importance of the multiple interfaces of acoustics in the academic community.

THEME: Reacoustic qualification of historic buildings

The IV Conrado Silva Acoustics Student Competition will have as its object of intervention the Diamantina Room, located at the Arts and Convention Center of the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), in the municipality of Ouro Preto, MG.

The UFOP Arts and Convention Center, inaugurated on March 21, 2001, results from the revitalization of the old Augusto Barbosa Metallurgical Park, built in 1946, configuring a relevant experience of requalification of an industrial complex for academic, scientific, cultural and tourist purposes.

The building is located in the protection perimeter of the Architectural and Urban Complex of Ouro Preto, of recognized historical, artistic and urban relevance. Due to this insertion, the proposals must observe the principles of preservation of cultural heritage, ensuring compatibility between the proposed intervention and the existing architectural context.
