The need to interconnect the country electrically is directly linked to its economic development. In the Brazilian case, besides the usual alternating current transmission lines, large direct current lines are also used, which are called HVDC (High Voltage Direct Transmission). The most classical technology for HVDC transmission is the LCC (Line Comuted Converter), of which Brazil has a total of 6 links in operation. As technology advances, MMC (Modular Multilevel Converter) topologies are being considered for HVDC transmission, due to their greater flexibility and ability to provide ancillary services.
Professor Jon Are Suul, from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and SINTEF Energy Research, will conduct the talk "Inertia Emulation Control of MMC HVDC systems", covering topics such as the introduction to MMC topology and control, the application of VSM (Virtual Synchronous Machines) in this type of converter and the possibility to emulate inertia in MMC HVDC systems. In addition, a brief differentiation between follower and grid-former converters will be presented.
