The international event Òye: Connection and Education in the Terreiro-World is a large-scale hybrid event designed to bring together researchers, activists, cultural producers, and social mobilizers from diverse backgrounds, including Black, Quilombola, Indigenous communities, people with disabilities, and the LGBTQIAPN+ community.
This event seeks to address urgent issues concerning ethno-racial relations, territoriality, education, and public policies by critiquing dominant Western knowledge, which perpetuates exclusionary and hierarchical models, marginalizing non-European knowledges and practices. The event proposes to reverse this logic by creating a platform that revalues non-white and insurgent cosmologies, grounded in the notion of the ‘earth-world.’
The event does not merely consider territory as an object of study but uses it as a point of epistemological and political enunciation. Its commitment to essential areas of citizenship and public policies—including health, education, land access, culture, and security—is central to its mission, aligning with the historical struggles of racialized and marginalized populations.
The event’s structure revolves around four core thematic axes:
Earth, Terreiro, and Territory: Confluences in Differences, which investigates the interactions between cosmologies and territorial resistances;
Bodies-Territory: For an Intersectional Racialized Health, exploring the dimensions of race and intersectionality in health;
Under the Baobab Tree: (Re)Writing on the Ground of Education, which challenges colonial pedagogical practices and proposes decolonial alternatives in education; and
Religiosity and Ancestrality: Weaving Intergenerational Memories, reflecting on the role of ancestry, spirituality, and religiosity in territory.
