The political life of the Atlantic Archipelago is marked by impermanence and flux. Kingdoms, Unions, Empires, Commonwealths, Free States, and Republics have coexisted and succeeded one another – and there are signs that change might be in the offing. For centuries, the circulation of texts has shown that ideas and human imagination oftentimes ignore boundaries, jurisdictions, and social hierarchies propped up by states and authorities. Complex processes of literary and intellectual exchange, editorial production and distribution, and formation of readerly practices and affects have frequently infused an archipelagic, or even trans-oceanic, dimension into several poems, novels, plays, and short stories by Welsh, Scottish, Manx, Irish, and English writers.
“The Literary Archipelago” is a one-week conference invested in assessing, discussing, and celebrating the variegated and intrinsically cosmopolitan emergence and circulation of texts from the Atlantic Archipelago, especially from its Irish and Scottish portions. Welcoming scholars from Europe and South America, and focusing on writers who have reached a global audience (such as Ossian, Oscar Wilde, Éilís Ní Dhuibhne, and Claire Keegan), whose texts have therefore been subjected to creative transcultural readings and misreadings (by figures as diverse as Jorge Luis Borges and José de Alencar), the conference aims to foster an internationalist, collaborative approach and environment for scholars and students working on, or interested in, the literatures of the Atlantic Archipelago.
The conference is supported by the W. B. Yeats Chair of Irish Studies and the Seed Fund (Universidade de São Paulo - University of Birmingham).
O Arquipélago Literário
A vida política do Arquipélago Atlântico caracteriza-se pela impermanência e pela fluidez. Ao longo do tempo, reinos, uniões, impérios, comunidades, Estados livres e repúblicas não apenas se sucederam, mas também coexistiram – e há indícios de que novas transformações ainda estão por vir. Há séculos, a circulação de textos evidencia que as ideias e a imaginação frequentemente ultrapassam fronteiras, jurisdições e hierarquias sociais impostas por Estados e autoridades. Nesse contexto, complexos processos de intercâmbio literário e intelectual, bem como de produção, edição, distribuição e recepção de obras, têm conferido uma dimensão arquipelágica – por vezes até transoceânica – a poemas, romances, peças e contos de autores galeses, escoceses, maneses, irlandeses e ingleses.
“O Arquipélago Literário” é uma conferência de uma semana dedicada a examinar, discutir e celebrar as formas múltiplas e intrinsecamente cosmopolitas de emergência e circulação de textos no Arquipélago Atlântico, com especial atenção às tradições irlandesa e escocesa. Reunindo pesquisadores da Europa e da América do Sul, enfocando autores que alcançaram projeção global (como Ossian, Oscar Wilde, Éilís Ní Dhuibhne e Claire Keegan), cujas obras foram portanto reinterpretadas e reconfiguradas em outras culturas (por nomes tão diversos quanto os de Jorge Luis Borges e José de Alencar), a conferência busca fomentar uma perspectiva internacionalista e colaborativa entre pesquisadores e estudantes que atuam, ou têm interesse, no campo das literaturas do Arquipélago Atlântico.
