A rede QRCA começou tentativamente como um “workshop” em 2018, na Universidade de São Paulo (USP), em São Paulo, Brasil. Muitas pessoas que participaram se recordam que sentiram que um movimento importante e diferente estava emergindo: o desenvolvimento de um fórum comprometido com um espírito de internacionalidade, na qual os pesquisadores e as pesquisadoras latino-americanos, interessados em formas “alternativas” de pesquisa contábil, poderiam apresentar suas propostas de pesquisa e trabalhos em andamento para uma audiência receptiva. Desde então, a rede QRCA gradualmente se expandiu, particularmente por meio das conferências QRCA anuais que se seguiram em 2019, 2020, 2021 e 2022. Em 2023, a rede apoiou a realização da Conferência da CPA, em Bogotá, em Colômbia.
Desde o início, os autores e autoras apresentando nas conferências QRCA se beneficiaram de uma respeitosa interação e do oferecimento de comentários construtivos. Essa configuração permitiu a escuta e a contribuição entre pares que colocaram à disposição do grupo seus conhecimentos e trajetórias pessoais e profissionais. Além disso, estudantes de pós-graduação puderam encontrar na rede QRCA o apoio de pesquisadores experientes que tinham o objetivo de ajudar pesquisadores e pesquisadoras iniciantes no desenvolvimento de suas pesquisas. Ao fazer isso, aos pesquisadores mais jovens foi oferecida a oportunidade de se juntar a uma comunidade acadêmica solidária com a qual poderiam se identificar e que poderiam ajudar a construir.
Uma das pedras angulares das conferências QRCA, desde o primeiro encontro, é o respeito para com apresentadores, debatedores e pessoas na audiência. É completamente correto fazer críticas ao trabalho de outras pessoas, mas nas conferências QRCA as críticas devem ser pautadas pelo espírito de colegialidade e compreensão mútua.
Outra característica da rede QRCA é a versatilidade linguística. Ou seja, qualquer pessoa pode apresentar em uma das principais línguas faladas nas Américas. Até agora, as apresentações são predominantemente feitas em português e espanhol – e em certa extensão em inglês. Vários colegas de nossa comunidade acabam publicando algumas de suas pesquisas em periódicos em inglês. Outros colegas, que cresceram na América Latina, agora trabalham em instituições localizadas em outros continentes. Colegas do estrangeiro, que não são necessariamente fluentes em espanhol ou português, também participaram das conferências QRCA – estando especialmente motivados a se envolverem com a rede na troca de ideias. A participação ativa desses colegas, que frequentemente se expressam em inglês, não deve ser entendida como um movimento de dominação ou de imposição de valores ou agendas “estrangeiras”. Pelo contrário, esse envolvimento deve ser visto como uma iniciativa objetivando a construção de pontes entre as nossas diferentes origens. De um ponto de vista abrangente, todos nós formamos uma comunidade plural, que compartilha vínculos e laços, caracterizados por uma abertura e respeito por diferenças em cultura, línguas e gerações.
Para que essa iniciativa seja sustentável e tenha continuidade, precisamos de pessoas que possam renovar a rede QRCA – e estamos empenhados a acolher a cada ano as pessoas recém-chegadas, os novos entrantes, capazes de participar de diferentes formas na sustentação da rede.
A QRCA não é somente um pequeno grupo de pessoas. Como um lugar de encontro e ponto de fusão, a rede busca crescer e se desenvolver para além dos rótulos, para além das barreiras linguísticas, superando diferenças teóricas, disciplinares e culturais, tornando-se um fórum onde não temos medo de fazer perguntas difíceis e repensar nossas posições e trajetórias.
Nossas experiências relativas às edições passadas da conferência indicam que somos capazes de nos desenvolver com ideias e valores tão nobres. Temos participado de conversas que são relevantes, trazendo pessoas de diversos ambientes, culturas e contextos que não se sentiram constrangidas a discutir questões sensíveis e que estão dispostas a colaborar. Temos visto participantes propondo pesquisas relevantes, expondo-se, abrindo novas possibilidades, pedindo mudanças. As pessoas participaram de sessões em formatos diferentes, superando barreiras linguísticas e epistêmicas, para se comunicar e contribuir com o trabalho umas das outras.
Finalmente, queremos enfatizar duas palavras que, acreditamos, refletem a nossa essência: solidariedade e reflexividade. Solidariedade de muitas maneiras, incluindo a constituição de pontes entre a academia e os movimentos sociais. Assim, alguns de nós estamos cada vez mais interessados no ativismo acadêmico. Reflexividade com relação a várias questões-chaves: Estamos nos vendo como iguais? Estamos participando dos debates mantendo nossa civilidade e colegialidade acadêmica? Estamos constantemente refletindo sobre nosso papel em cada um dos debates com os quais nos engajamos? Estamos abertos a diferentes formas de fazer e de pensar a pesquisa?

The QRCA network began tentatively as a “workshop” in 2018 at USP in São Paulo. Many participants recall that they felt an important and different movement was emerging: the development of a forum committed to a spirit of internationality, in which Latin American researchers interested in “alternative” forms of accounting research could present their research proposals and work in progress to a receptive audience. Since then, the QRCA network has gradually expanded, particularly through the annual QRCA conferences that followed in 2019 and 2020.
From the outset, the authors presenting at the QRCA conferences benefited from respectful interaction and constructive comments. This configuration allowed for listening and contribution among peers who made their knowledge and personal and professional backgrounds available to the group. In addition, postgraduate students were able to find support within the QRCA network from experienced researchers whose aim was to help novice researchers develop their research. In doing so, younger researchers were offered the opportunity to join a supportive academic community with which they could identify and which they could help to build.
One of the cornerstones of QRCA conferences, from the very first meeting, is respect for presenters, discussants and people in the audience. It's all very well to criticize other people's work, but at QRCA conferences criticism must be guided by a spirit of collegiality and mutual understanding.
Another feature of the QRCA network is its linguistic versatility. In other words, anyone can present in one of the main languages spoken in the Americas. So far, presentations have predominantly been made in Portuguese and Spanish - to some extent in English. Several colleagues from our community end up publishing some of their research in English-language journals. Other colleagues, who grew up in Latin America, now work in institutions located on other continents. Colleagues from abroad, who are not necessarily fluent in Spanish or Portuguese, have also attended QRCA conferences - being especially motivated to engage with the network in the exchange of ideas. The active participation of these colleagues who often express themselves in English should not be understood as a move towards domination or the imposition of “foreign” values or agendas. On the contrary, this involvement should be seen as an initiative aimed at building bridges between our different backgrounds. From a broad point of view, we all form a plural community that shares bonds and ties, characterized by an openness and respect for differences in culture, languages and generations.
In order for this initiative to be sustainable and to continue, we need people who can renew the QRCA network - and we are committed to welcoming newcomers every year who are able to participate in different ways in sustaining the network.
The QRCA is not just a small group of people. As a meeting place and merging point, the network seeks to grow and develop beyond labels, beyond language barriers, overcoming theoretical, disciplinary and cultural differences, becoming a forum where we are not afraid to ask difficult questions and rethink our positions and trajectories.
Our experiences of past editions of the conference indicate that we are capable of developing with such noble ideas and values. We have participated in conversations that are relevant, bringing people from diverse environments, cultures and contexts who have not felt embarrassed to discuss sensitive issues and who are willing to collaborate. We have seen participants proposing relevant research, exposing themselves, opening up new possibilities, asking for change. People have attended sessions in different formats, overcoming linguistic and epistemic barriers in order to communicate and contribute to each other's work.
Finally, we want to emphasize two words that we believe reflect our essence: solidarity and reflexivity. Solidarity in many ways, including building bridges between academia and social movements. Thus, some of us are increasingly interested in academic activism. Reflexivity with regard to several key questions: Are we seeing each other as equals? Are we participating in debates while maintaining our civility and academic collegiality? Are we constantly reflecting on our role in each of the debates we engage with? Are we open to different ways of doing and thinking about research?
