Latin America Cryo-EM Workshop Overview


This workshop is designed to provide training on cryo-electron tomography, covering from sample preparation to advanced data processing. Attendees will benefit from expert-led sessions and hands-on experience with cutting-edge equipment.


Event Dates: August 26-30, 2024

Format: Intensive 5-day workshop featuring lectures and practical sessions

Location: National Center for Structural Biology and Bioimaging (CENABIO) - UMA/UFRJ

  • Lectures will also be streamed online

Daily Schedule and Focus Areas:

Section 1: Sample Preparation and Data Collection
Dates: August 26-28 (Monday to Wednesday)
Head: Prof. Dorit Hanein
Speakers: Dr. Cécile Sauvanet, Mr. Peter van Blerkom, Prof. Kildare Miranda, Thermo Fisher support team
Assistant instructors: Msc. Adélia Belem, Dr. Ingrid Augusto, Dr. Moara Lemos, Msc. Vânia Vieira

Section 2: Image Processing, Reconstruction, and Interpretation
Dates: August 28-30 (Wednesday to Friday)
Head: Prof. Niels Volkmann
Speakers: Dr. Stefan Raunser, Mr. Peter van Blerkom
Assistant instructors: Msc. Adélia Belem, Dr. Ingrid Augusto, Dr. Moara Lemos, Msc. Vânia Vieira

Equipment:
Participants will have access to state-of-the-art equipment including:

  • Titan Krios G4
  • Tecnai TF20 FEG
  • Aquilos 2
  • Vitrobot Mark IV
  • Additional necessary tools

Support Team:

  • Thermo Fisher engineers
  • Application experts
  • A skilled Brazilian team of cryo-EM specialists

Application - In-person Lectures and Practical Sessions

Due to limited space, 40 applicants will be selected to attend the in-person lectures. From these, 10 will be chosen to participate in the practical sessions.

Applicants should be able to utilize their newly acquired knowledge in their projects, having access to the necessary instruments or the prospect of applying to one of the facilities. Applications containing this information will be reviewed, and candidates will be informed of their application status by email.
