XXIII International Conference on Building Pathology and Construction Repair [São Paulo, Brazil]

Resilience, Innovation, and Adaptation to Climate Change

The XXIII International Conference on Building Pathology and Constructions Repair (CINPAR 2027) will be held from June 2 to 4, 2027, at the University of São Paulo (USP), bringing together researchers, professionals, public-sector managers, and representatives of the construction industry in an international forum of scientific and technological excellence. The event has established itself as one of the most relevant conferences in the fields of pathology, rehabilitation, and structural strengthening, with a continuous history dating back to 2003 and successful editions held in South America and Europe. The scientific and technological merit of CINPAR 2027 lies in its integrated approach to strategic issues for the development of the construction sector, including structural inspection and diagnosis, material characterization and innovation, testing methods, responses to natural hazards, built heritage rehabilitation, sustainability, technical standardization, and advanced structural strengthening solutions. The event promotes the dissemination of cutting-edge knowledge and exchange between academia and the productive sector, directly contributing to innovation and the advancement of construction practices. The event’s potential impact and broad scope are further enhanced by its international participation, the inclusion of multiple subfields of engineering and architecture, and the organization of technical sessions, keynote lectures, and parallel activities.

Eixos [Topics]

[1]  Inspection and Defects

This thematic area encompasses studies related to the identification, characterization, diagnosis, and assessment of defects and pathological manifestations in existing structures and buildings. Topics include visual and instrumental inspection methods, destructive and non-destructive testing, damage mapping, identification of deterioration mechanisms, analysis of causes and consequences, assessment of conservation and performance conditions, as well as methodologies for the diagnosis and monitoring of defects in structural and non-structural elements. New technologies applied to inspection are also included, such as artificial intelligence, image processing, drones, sensors, and digital systems for diagnostic support.

[2]  Materials and Techniques

This thematic area covers research on materials, construction systems, and methods for the intervention, repair, rehabilitation, and strengthening of existing structures. Topics include both traditional and innovative materials, such as concrete, mortars, steel, timber, stone, earth-based materials, and composites, as well as sustainable, recycled, low-carbon, nanostructured, and bio-based materials. Traditional and advanced repair and strengthening techniques, surface treatments, protection against deterioration agents, material compatibility, durability, performance, and experimental assessment of new solutions are also included.

[3] Risk Assessment

This thematic area addresses the identification, analysis, quantification, and management of risks associated with the built environment and existing structures. Topics include structural vulnerability, safety assessment, reliability, probability of damage and failure, seismic risk, fire, floods, landslides, wind, environmental actions, and other natural or human-induced hazards. Probabilistic methods, uncertainty analysis, scenario assessment, resilience, risk management, intervention prioritization, and strategies to reduce consequences and enhance the safety and service life of existing structures are also covered.

[4]  Infrastructure

This thematic area focuses on the inspection, assessment, maintenance, rehabilitation, and management of infrastructure structures and systems. Topics include bridges, viaducts, tunnels, pavements, dams, retaining structures, port structures, transportation systems, and other civil engineering infrastructure. Studies addressing structural integrity assessment, deterioration and service life, monitoring, preventive and corrective maintenance, recurrence of damage after repairs, asset management, rehabilitation and strengthening techniques, as well as digital methods and decision-support systems are included.

[5] Built Heritage

This thematic area brings together research focused on the conservation, preservation, diagnosis, maintenance, rehabilitation, and enhancement of architectural and built heritage. Topics include historic buildings and ensembles, modern heritage, vernacular structures, industrial heritage, and other buildings and structures of cultural significance. Research on traditional materials and construction techniques, characterization and diagnosis of damage, historical and geometric documentation, damage mapping, preventive conservation, compatibility and reversibility of interventions, structural performance and safety of historic structures, as well as adaptation, sustainability, and heritage management strategies are also included.

[6]  Information Modeling

This thematic area covers the application of Building Information Modeling (BIM), Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM), Digital Twins, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other digital technologies to the investigation, documentation, assessment, and management of the built environment. Topics include the modeling and documentation of existing buildings, integration of inspection data, laser scanning and photogrammetric surveys, heritage digitization, process automation, defect recognition, information management and visualization, model-based monitoring, interoperability, and decision support throughout the life cycle of buildings and structures.

[7] Research and Recent Developments

This thematic area is dedicated to new approaches, methods, technologies, and research findings that contribute to the advancement of the assessment, rehabilitation, conservation, and management of existing structures and buildings, particularly interdisciplinary studies and developments that do not fit entirely within the other thematic areas. Topics include experimental and computational developments, new analysis and diagnostic methods, emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, automation, sensing and monitoring, sustainability, climate change, performance and durability, as well as innovative approaches aimed at enhancing the safety, resilience, and service life of existing structures.
