Summary
Bioinformatics is a research area that uses computer science approaches to analyze biological data. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, the teaching and dissemination of bioinformatics is crucial. In this context, Brazil has stood out for its robust research community in bioinformatics and related areas, promoting several contributions to the field of research. However, the lack of articles, tutorials, and study materials in Portuguese makes it challenging to draw in new prospective students. Here we show the results of implementing BIOINFO - the first Brazilian journal of scientific dissemination in bioinformatics and computational biology written in Portuguese. The BIOINFO journal welcomes submissions of scientific dissemination articles, technical articles, tutorials, videos, illustrative images, and opinion articles pertaining to the field of bioinformatics and its related areas. Its main objective is to promote the field of bioinformatics within our country. Also, BIOINFO is free and open access. It operates on a continuous flow submission model and conducts the publication process on an annual basis. The publication model is based on a well-established editorial, ethics, conduct, corrections, and reproduction policy. The journal is maintained by an independent editorial committee composed of professionals with master’s or doctoral degrees from different Brazilian universities and research institutes. Since 2021, the journal has published 32 papers by 54 authors in the first edition and 21 in the second. In the first two editions, articles were published as book chapters. However, in 2023 the journal received the ISSN registration and will be able to publish the manuscripts as scientific dissemination articles (ISSN: 2764-8273). In addition, since 2022, the journal has been part of a non-profit project to create a scientific dissemination network in bioinformatics and computational biology entitled the BIOINFO.com Network. In the last 12 months, the website already received more than 22,650 unique visitors from all parts of the world, with over 92% of them from Brazil. The journal is available at https://bioinfo.com.br.
