GAS SENSORS POLYSTYRENE IONOMERS AMMONIA
Resumo
Polymers have attracted the attention of researchers from different areas due to their mechanical and electrical properties and easy processability for decades. The ionomers are part of the group of organic polymers constituted by chains of low polarity, which have a relatively low concentration of <15% of ionic groups attached to their chain [1]. The ionic groups can be scattered randomly along the polymer chain, located at regular intervals or even at the ends of the chain (telechelic ionomers). Thermoplastic elastomers are very important because they have a combination of thermoplasticity and elasticity. This behavior is generally attributed to the multiphase morphology of these systems. The rigid blocks (in block copolymers) or ionic groups (in ionomers) associate, generating a phase separation at the microscopic level, where small rigid domains are dispersed in the elastomeric matrix, but chemically bonded to it. Common applications for ionomers: additives to aid in the passage of electrical current in Thin Films, gas sensors, etc. The starting polymer was prepared by free radical copolymerization of styrene. The sulfonation reaction was carried out using the Makowski method [2,3] in a homogeneous medium using acetyl sulfate as a sulfonating agent, obtained "in situ" by the reaction of acetic anhydride with concentrated acid. It was then dissolved in xylene at a concentration of 0.2 mg/ml. Then, the fabrication of thin films was carried out on the interdigitated substrate using spin coating techniques. This technique is based on spreading the solution on the desired substrate which is on a rotating table, then with the aid of a pipette, the solution is applied to the substrate. Finally, evaporation of the solvent results in a film (film). Tests were performed with the gas, where we can see that the sample showed a response with the presence of ammonium hydroxide. Remaining effective in all cycles. Polystyrene samples with concentrations of 8 and 20% of sulfonation using the spin technique are effective in the presence of ammonium hydroxide gas. Remaining constant in the 10 cycles performed.
