Resumo
The global transition toward a sustainable energy matrix requires a fundamental shift in how we design and implement storage technologies. Our research focuses on developing high-performance, eco-friendly electrochemical systems by integrating molecular engineering, bio-interfaces, and advanced nanomaterials1. This summary highlights advances in three areas: bio-batteries, organic redox batteries, and organic supercapacitors. In bio-electrochemical energy, it was proposed yeast based bio-batteries that differ from traditional enzymatic biofuel cells by operating as self-contained power units rather than relying on a continuous external fuel supply; our yeast bio-batteries leverage microorganisms’ metabolic and structural capabilities and are guided by a framework prioritizing energy density and long-term stability [1,2]. It is also described organic battery technologies as safer, non-toxic organic batteries through self-gelling, quinone-based wearable micro-batteries and the elucidation of the molecular and electrostatic principles for all-quinone aqueous redox flow batteries, which simplify battery design while maintaining effective charge stabilization [3-5]. For organic supercapacitors, it is also relevant to build metal-free, safer, and potentially biodegradable devices by using bio-inspired molecules that switch redox states rapidly, can be immobilized onto conductive scaffolds, and remain stable over many cycles in aqueous or gel electrolytes. It is discussed some possibilities to use nature’s reversible redox chemistry of catechol ? quinone and related molecules to add pseudocapacitance on top of carbon’s electric double-layer storage.
