Summary
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are many solvents or chemical characterized by low vapour pressure at ambient temperature. They are generating mainly by industrial processes such as paints, printing, varnish, wax, electronic fabrication among others. In addition to be highly combustible, some compound represents a risk factor for human health because they contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone when reacting with nitrogen oxides in the air causing damage to the liver, kidney, central nervous system and cancer. In face this problem, it is important to develop one system for detecting it. Thin film array sensors make possible to apply for detecting different volatiles and concentrations. Fabricated by interdigitated electrodes, the devices can be used to define the response of the sensor array based on the electrical conductivity parameters of the different thin film deposited by drop-casting method with conducting polymers (PEDOT:PSS, PANI), MWCNT (Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes) dispersion solution and rubbery ion gels based on ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide [EMI][TFSA]). Electrodes can to performance for each type of VOC like base (ammonium hydroxide), acid (acetic acid) and alcohols (isopropanol and ethanol) by electrical impedance spectroscopy measurements through a static atmosphere by metallic chamber in which the measurements were carried out in three alternated cycles of exposure between ambient air and solvent. In each cycle of exposition to the volatile, the response of the system showed increasing/decreasing of the impedance real depending to the volatile and returning almost to the initial state when back to the ambient air. Evaluating it in 4 different concentrations (5 ppm, 10 ppm, 20 ppm and 50 ppm) of the VOC, for each volatile the response was observed as linear increasing the response with the increase of the concentration with each thin film electrode. With the data of impedance spectroscopy measured in a specific frequency, the system showed the capability to discriminate each volatile by Principal Components Analysis (PCA) indicating that the system has potential to be employed as a system for detecting VOCs.
