Summary
Organic solar cells (OSCs) are an interesting option to reduce environmental impact. The main advantage is the production of portable and flexible devices, with low weight and low cost, making the use of their accessible in everyday life. In this field, the search for non-fullerene acceptor materials (NFAs) is currently one of the main focuses in the development of OSCs. As an option to replace fullerenes, columnar liquid crystals (ColLCs) based on perylene diimide stand out as promising materials. Their excellent optical, self-organizing, and n-type semiconductor properties make them attractive for applications in OSCs. ColLCs have the advantage of controlling the molecular orientation to obtain charge transport in the desired direction[1]. They also have values of exciton diffusion length between 50-100 nm that enable efficient charge transport and the production of devices with thicker layers[2]. In this work, a room temperature ColLC based on a benzoperylene diimide diester has been analyzed as NFA by combining with PFO-DBT polymer as the donor (D). The investigated ColLC presents an absorbance spectrum complementary to the polymer absorption. The absorbance spectrum range of the mixture comprises a 300 -650 nm region. As the polymer is added to the ColLC, the ColLC photoluminescence is quenched. This quenching may be caused by a D:A charge transfer or even by an energy transfer enabled by the spectral overlap between the emission of the ColLC and the polymer absorption. Thin films of the mixtures were aligned with the ColLC molecules in face-on orientation. The alignment was obtained by confinement of the films using a sacrificial layer on top and applying thermal treatment. Aligned samples resulted in higher absorbance and photoluminescence (PL) intensity. Furthermore, aligned films of the mixtures showed vibronic PL emission, similar to the results in solution, indicating that in the mixture films, the perylene-ColLC molecules aggregation is reduced. The solvent additive DIO was added in different concentrations to the mixtures. An increase in the crystallinity of the films was observed by MOLP and DRX measurements by increasing DIO concentration, indicating an enhanced morphology of the films. Finally, AFM measurements showed homogeneous surfaces, ideal for application in optoelectronic devices. We are thankful to CAPES, CAPES-COFECUB Project, CNPq, and INCT/INEO. 1. Eccher, J., Faria, G.
