Summary
Metallic alloys based on copper and zinc, such as "brass alloys" have been greatly explored over time due to their favorable properties, such as high resistance to corrosion, malleability and also a bright golden-yellow appearance. However, during alloy production a process with strong acid solutions is used in a process called acid pickling, which generates a highly harmful residue [1]. In this scenario, the present work presents a hydrothermal co-precipitation synthesis of a nanocomposite structure composed of copper and zinc oxides nanoparticles (CuO/ZnO-NPs) aiming its application as antimicrobial material and heterogeneous photocatalyst [2]. Nanostructured metal oxides such as ZnO and CuO have gained a great attention from material scientists and engineers due to their complementary properties, which in turn provides promising applications in various fields of technology [3]. Xray diffraction reported product hexagonal wurtzite structure. The nanosized distribution of the composite and surface morphology was checked via FE-SEM and HRTEM, whereas, the elemental compositions of the samples were confirmed by EDX, SAED, and XPS, respectively. Photoluminescence studies demonstrated a strong decrease of ZnO emission, which is favorable for photocatalysts [2]. As model pollutants, we used the organic pesticides that were efficiently photodegraded by CuO/ZnO-NPs using an Hg polychromatic lamp. In addition, antimicrobial activity of the material was assessed against S. aureus and E. Coli bacteria via agar well diffusion method. The zone of inhibition (ZOI) for CuO/ZnO-NPs was found to be significantly higher than that observed for pure ZnO and CuO. Therefore, the proposed method allowed obtaining a nanocomposite material from industrial waste from a very simple synthetic method, which may add value to copper industries and the environment. In addition, the synthesized CuO/ZnO-NPs presents synergistic action as a potential nano antibiotic several bacterial strains and a potent photocatalyst for degradation of emerging pollutants from wastewater.
