Summary
The growth dynamics of silver nanoparticles inside a thin film of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) has been the focus of the study. After silver ion implantation in PMMA thin films, there has been a spontaneous process of nucleation and growth of silver nanoparticles. Four different doses were used for low-energy ion implantation: 0.41 x 1016 atoms/cm2, 0.66 x 1016 atoms/cm2, 1.03 x 1016 atoms/cm2 and 1.07 x 1016 atoms/cm2. TEM images have been obtained and processed for measuring Feret’s nanoparticles diameter values for each sample. The statistical distribution of the diameter for each dose showed a profile of two Gaussian mixtures, allowing assigning two classes of nanoparticles for each dose. Comparing the diameter distribution curves of all doses, it has been observed that the local maximum of the curves occurs at values close to the same diameter, with an intersection point of the curves around 5.5 nm. The intersection point has been adopted as the transition point between classes of nanoparticles. As the silver dosage increases, there was a migration from smaller particles to larger particles in the distribution. The distribution profile does not change, but the relative number of larger particles increases as the relative number of smaller particles decreases. A model of nanoparticle growth associated with the diffusion of silver nanoparticles inside the film was proposed. For doses 10 times higher than those used, permanent electrical percolation has not been observed, indicating that the transmission inside the thin film remains the same for larger nanoparticles. Our hypothesis has been that there was a sensitive change in diffusion as the diameter increases. Thus , there was a process of shielding the larger particles provided by the smaller particles in each ion implantation cycle. At each cycle of ion implantation, the smaller nanoparticles increased their diameter, affecting their diffusion. Such dynamics would explain the diameter distribution curves.
