Summary
The research and development of organic materials over the past decades allowed their application as active layers in organic electronics such as light-emitting diodes, sensors, and solar cells. Therefore, the main conducting polymers nowadays have relatively well-known nanostructures and physicochemical properties. On the other hand, low bandgap polymers are comparatively new, and although they usually lead to organic solar cells with higher efficiency, there is a lack of research considering their overall properties to achieve a better understanding of those materials. In this research, two low bandgap polymers were synthesized (poly[4,4’-diethylhexyl-4H-cyclopenta [2,1-b;3,4-b’]dithiophene-alt-2,5- didodecyl-3,6–bis(thiophen-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]-pyrrole-1,4-dione] (abbreviation PCPDTDPP_C12) and poly[4,4’-diethylhexyl-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b’]dithiophene–alt-2,5- di(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl-3,6-bis(thiophen-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]-pyrrole-1,4-dione] (abbreviation PCPDTDPP_TEG)) [1] to evaluate some of their nanostructure and physico-chemical properties. These polymers were solubilized in chloroform with a concentration of 0,2mg/ml and spread in the Langmuir trough KSV 5000 to evaluate their pressure-area isotherms. From the isotherms, we were able to estimate the average molecular areas of the polymers and the ideal deposition pressure in the solid phase to transfer the Langmuir films to solid substrates by the Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) technique. The films deposited on glass substrates were evaluated by UV-visible spectroscopy with the spectrophotometer Cary 100 UV-Vis, to analyze the growth of the LS layers. Fifteen layers were deposited for each material, with optical analysis being performed on the odd layers. The linear growth of LS layers was observed. Two bands were observed for each material, with the maximum absorption centered at 426nm and 746nm for PCPDTDPP_C12 and 430nm and 834nm for PCPDTDPP_TEG. Films were deposited in gold interdigitated electrodes (IDE) to evaluate their electrical properties like conductivity and resistance. With direct current (DC) measurements, the conductivity and resistance values of the materials were estimated. In the next steps of this research, the materials will be evaluated as ammonia and organic volatile compounds (VOCs) gas sensors.
