Summary
The rapid development of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology has motivated intensive research into organic materials as potential candidates for the active layers of these devices1. By synthesizing new polymers, researchers are able to tailor the characteristics of these materials to optimize the emission and durability of OLEDs2. Based on this, the terpolymer LaPPS76 (L76) was studied in this work. Its monomer is composed of the combination of segments from the fluorene-terpyridine (FT) and fluorene-benzothiadiazole (FB) copolymers, synthesized through the Suzuki polycondensation route. These separated copolymers are referred to as LaPPS75 (L75) and LaPPS54 (L54), respectively. To understand the emission and quantify energy transfer (ET) processes between chromophores, solutions of L76 diluted in tetrahydrofuran (THF) were prepared with two relative concentrations of chromophores: 30% of FT and 70% of FB, and the inverse (70% of FT and 30% of FB). Blends were also prepared at the same relative concentrations of L75 and L54. Optical characterization of L76 showed that upon excitation of the FT absorption region, FB emission was observed, indicating energy transfer from FT to FB. It was also observed that for L76 (70:30), there is saturation of FB emission and, consequently, FT emission. The PL of the blends showed less efficient ET, indicating that in the terpolymer, ET is internal to the molecule. Decay time measurements of emission confirmed that ET is more efficient in L76, with a shorter amplitude averaged lifetime, and the shortest time was observed for the (30:70) concentration. ET efficiency was calculated3 using the lifetime results, and the data showed an efficiency of 83% for L76 (30:70) and 44% for L76 (70:30). The Förster radius between L75 and L54 was calculated using the optical characterization spectra, as well as the radius of interaction between donor and acceptor molecules3,4.
