Summary
Polymers based on cellulose derivative have been attracting the interest due to the biodegradation of certain polymers concerning sustainable approach [1]. Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB) is one the polymer that has interesting properties such as easy processability, film forming, flexibility, high transparence in the visible range, compatible with different coatings and biodegradation. Its solubility in a wide variety of solvents and solvent combinations make it useful as an additive in numerous coating compositions. It has been applied, for instance, as additive in printing inks and layer in humidity sensor [2] and diffuser layer to suppression of the viewing angle dependence on blue OLEDs [3]. Considering these properties CAB arises as potential matrix for immobilization of lanthanides for luminescent material applications. In this work, [Eu(tta)3(H2O)2] complex was incorporated, in different concentration 0.2 to 3.2% (w:w), in the Eastman CAB-551-0.2 (Butyryl 52wt, Acetyl 2wt and Hydroxyl 1.8% content) Mw 30000 by using ethyl acetate as a solvent. Films based on CAB-[Eu(tta)3(H2O)2] were synthesized by casting and characterized by FTIR-ATR, UV-Vis, TGA and Photoluminescence. Thin films by blade and spin coating deposition were also obtained on glass and PET-ITO substrates. Moreover, films presented high transparence in the visible range (400-800 nm), flexible and presented a broad band from 200 to 400 nm with maxima at 270 and 340 nm assigned to p-p* excited states of ligand. FTIR-ATR showed that complex was well dispersed in the CAB matrix. In addition, the films are thermally stable up to approximately 300 °C. Excitation spectra monitored at 614 nm (5D0 - 7F2) showed a broad band in the UV region with maximum peak shifted to higher energy as a function of complex content. Intra f-f emission spectra exhibited high intense red-orange sharp lines intra 4f6 ascribed to 5D0 - 7F0-4 transitions excited by antenna affect [4]. CIE diagram also showed (x,y) color coordinates. The lifetimes were obtained by decay curves fitted by first order exponential showed values of 0.32 ms. The synergism between CAB and Eu3+ complex show potential for flexible emitting luminescent layer for optical devices.
